Lakeland Children's Social Security Lawyers

Raising a child with a disability is very difficult. It is even more stressful if you don't have the financial resources to provide for your child's special needs. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits may be paid to disabled children who meet the Social Security Administration's (SSA) definition of disabled.

At Harris & Helwig, partner Suzanne Harris has more than 30 years experience with the Social Security Administration. She and her staff of four paralegals will guide you through the complex process and help you get the benefits you deserve.

In most cases, we charge a fee only if the client is approved for disability benefits. If you are not approved, no fee is due. Our initial consultations are free.

Does My Child Qualify for Benefits?

Social Security benefits for children use a different standard of disability than the adult rules. If the child does not have the severe listed symptoms, then the Social Security Administration divides a child's life into six categories, which they call "domains." The child has to have a severe, which Social Security Administration calls "marked," impairment in two of the six domains to qualify. The categories are:

  • Acquiring and using information — This category covers the child's ability to learn and use information.
  • Attending and completing tasks — This category covers the child's ability to focus and maintain concentration and begin to complete tasks.
  • Interacting and relating with others — This category covers the child's ability to interact with other people and form and maintain relationships.
  • Caring for you — This category covers the child's ability to maintain a healthy emotional and physical state.
  • Moving about and manipulating objects — This category covers the child's ability to move one's body from place to place, and move and manipulate objects.
  • Health and well-being — This category covers the child's cumulative physical effects of physical and mental impairments.
